From Green Beret to Real Estate CFO:
The Story Behind G2 Business Solutions
By Michael Glaspie | The Real Estate CFO | G2 Business Solutions
I didn't grow up thinking I'd own 134 rental units and operate as a Fractional CFO to real estate investors across the country. My path looked a lot different.
I spent over a decade as a Green Beret in U.S. Army Special Forces. I deployed. I led teams. I operated in environments where the margin for error was zero and the cost of poor planning was measured in lives — not dollars.
That experience shaped everything about how I approach business and investing. This is the story of how military discipline, financial intentionality, and one small investment decision set me on a path I never expected.

1. The Military Mindset That Built My Portfolio
Special Forces taught me one thing above everything else: intentionality. Every mission had a plan. Every plan had contingencies. You never walked into a situation without knowing your objective, your resources, and your exit.
Most people approach money the opposite way. They earn it, spend it, and hope something's left over. They react to financial situations instead of planning for them.
From the beginning, I treated my finances the way I treated a mission. I had an objective (financial freedom), I identified resources (income, discipline, time), and I built a plan. That mindset is available to anyone — you don't need a military background. You just need to decide to be intentional.
2. My First Investment: Under $2,000 Down
In 2014, while still in the Army, I bought my first investment property with under $2,000 down. I wasn't sitting on a pile of cash. I didn't have a mentor showing me the way. I had a copy of Rich Dad Poor Dad, a lot of questions, and enough discipline to not talk myself out of moving forward.
That first deal wasn't perfect. But it was real. And it changed how I saw money.
I watched a tenant pay down my mortgage every month while the property appreciated. I saw depreciation reduce my taxable income. I experienced, firsthand, why real estate is one of the most powerful wealth-building vehicles available to ordinary people.
One deal. That's all it took to shift my entire financial worldview.
3. The Moment Everything Changed
As my portfolio grew and my interest in real estate finance deepened, I realized something: most investors were great at finding deals and terrible at managing the financial side of their business. I saw investors with 20 properties who had no idea whether they were actually profitable. I saw people drowning in taxes that could have been avoided with basic planning.
I had spent years in Special Forces building financial discipline and systems thinking. I realized I could apply those skills to help investors not just own real estate — but build real businesses around it.
That realization led to the creation of G2 Business Solutions.
4. Building G2 Business Solutions
G2 started as a way to help real estate investors do what I had done — treat their portfolio like a business. That meant:
• Clean, accurate bookkeeping that told the real story of each property
• Tax strategy that went beyond just filing returns
• Financial analysis that helped investors understand where their money was actually going
• CFO-level thinking applied to real estate portfolios of all sizes
Today, G2 Business Solutions operates as a Fractional CFO service for real estate investors — providing the financial strategy and oversight that used to be reserved for large companies, accessible to individual investors and small teams.
The mission is simple: help investors increase profits, reduce taxes, and build lasting wealth through strategic financial management.
5. What I've Learned Managing 134+ Rental Units
134 units teaches you things no textbook can. Here are the most important lessons:
Systems Beat Hustle Every Time
Early on, I tried to manage everything manually. It doesn't scale. The investors who grow large portfolios have repeatable systems for rent collection, maintenance, tenant communication, and financial reporting. Build the system first. Then scale.
Your Numbers Will Tell You the Truth If You Listen
I've watched properties I loved emotionally tell a very different story financially. Track your numbers by property, monthly. The data will show you what's working and what needs attention before it becomes a crisis.
Your Team Is Your Leverage
No one builds 134 units alone. Property managers, contractors, a bookkeeper, a CPA, and a financial strategist — these people are not expenses. They're the leverage that makes growth possible.
Intentionality Compounds
Every intentional financial decision — separating bank accounts, tracking expenses, planning taxes, reviewing equity — compounds over time. The small things done consistently become massive advantages over a decade.
6. The Financial Principles I Live By
• You can't control everything — but you can control your money
• Clean books are the foundation of every good financial decision
• Tax strategy is not a once-a-year event — it's a year-round discipline
• Equity is a tool, not a trophy — make sure it's working
• Hire the expertise you don't have — your time has a cost too
• Systems scale; hustle doesn't
• Your financial team should be communicating — not operating in silos
7. What's Next
The YouTube channel, the Skool community, this blog — all of it exists because I believe financial education for real estate investors is still massively underserved. Most people teaching real estate focus on finding deals. Very few talk about what happens after the deal: the taxes, the bookkeeping, the entity structure, the equity management.
That's the gap I'm here to fill. And we're just getting started.
8. Final Thoughts
You don't need a Special Forces background to build a real estate portfolio. You don't need a finance degree to understand your numbers. You just need to decide to be intentional — and then find the right people to help you execute.
Whether you're buying your first investment property or managing a 100-unit portfolio, the financial principles are the same. Know your numbers. Build your systems. Plan your taxes. Protect your assets.
And never stop learning.
